Legislative Alert 4-26-21

It has been a busy week!! Gov Ducey banned “vaccine passports” and revoked his executive order requiring masks in public schools (provoking orders to mask by many school districts), he vetoed the sex ed bill, SB 1456 – (effectively erasing LGBTQ+ people from history, the arts or literature) – but replaced it with a very punitive executive order, both chambers passed “fetal personhood” SB 1457 and it’s going to the Governor’s desk Monday, the Maricopa County ballot “fraudit” continues “like watching a tsunami hitting a train wreck with a locust invasion”.

Fourteen voter suppression bills are still alive or have been signed into law.

Don’t get overwhelmed!  Keep on fighting as best you can!!

HB 2309 – OPPOSE – Targets anyone, along with seven or more others, who “intends” to engage in a riot and causes property damage or injury.  Police would decide if ANY gathering had unlawful “intentions” – this is a CLEAR violation of our First Amendment rights!!!!  CONTACT SENATORS and SENATE LEADERSHIP!

SB 1457 – OPPOSE – ON GOVERNOR’S DESK – This is a multi-pronged attack on the rights and agency of women.  It would give “unborn children at every stage of development” the same rights as an actual person – makes abortion due to any genetic abnormality a felony!  TWEET DUCEY!!!

SB 1459 – OPPOSE – Would subject the Corporation Commission to the administrative review process.  The Corp Comm is elected by the voters and should not be subjected to additional review.  This is a direct result of the Corp Comm’s rule that require state-regulated utilities to get 100% of their power from carbon-free sources by 2050 – something lawmakers want to stop any way they can!!  CONTACT SENATORS and SENATE LEADERSHIP!!

HB 2427 – OPPOSE – A Striker that revives SB 1685 that would remove attendance boundaries for schools.  AZ already has generous open enrollment policies – this bill is unnecessary and destructive.

HB 2462 – OPPOSE – Would force people to take extensive training (at least 80 hours) before serving on civilian review boards.  The added cost and time commitment of this requirement would shut out the communities most affected by police misconduct and would likely preclude many Arizonans from serving – Crafted by the AZ Police Association.  CONTACT SENATORS and SENATE LEADERSHIP!!

HB 2575 – OPPOSE – Bans hospitals from denying clergy visitation rights, including during a pandemic.  The bill is breathtakingly broad, making no provision for infection control training, fit-tested personal protective equipment, self-quarantine after exposure, or an acknowledgement of risks!  CONTACT SENATORS and SENATE LEADERSHIP!!

HB 2792 – OPPOSE – Would make it a class 5 felony to send someone a ballot if they didn’t explicitly request one.  Just another way to make it harder to vote!! CONTACT SENATORS and SENATE LEADERSHIP!!
