Legislative Alert ~ June 25

ARIZONA LEGISLATIVE ALERT

June 25, 2022

The Legislature has adjourned. Let’s try to stop some of the bad bills they passed as they skipped town.

CONTACT THE GOVERNOR AS BILLS MOVE TO HIM TO SIGN

IT IS BEST TO CALL HIS OFFICE TO VOICE YOUR OPPOSITION – 602-542-4331.

IF YOU TWEET – SEND YOUR OPPOSITION VIA TWITTER – @DOUGDUCEY

(He hates to get Tweets it seems!!)

EDUCATION

HB 2853 apparently has passed both the AZ House and the Senate and is on the way to the Governor to sign.  This is the bill that will expand ESA vouchers to ALL AZ students.  Opens the flood gates to take taxpayer money to fund private and religious schools WITHOUT oversight.  For what it’s worth reach out to Governor Ducey to ask that he NOT sign this bill. (He has already said that he will).

ALL IS NOT LOST!!  SAVE OUR SCHOOLS ARIZONA has vowed to launch a citizen’s initiative to BLOCK the ESA expansion.  They have 90 days from the end of the Legislative Session to get the necessary signatures.  They would need only 118,823 signatures to get it on the November ballot. Voters have blocked ESA expansion before and we can go it again.  Look for this initiative and do ALL you can to support it!!  We’ll be circulating petitions as soon as they become available.

WOMEN’S RIGHTS

The US Supreme Court has overturned Roe v. Wade.  This despite the fact that the majority justices said that Roe v. Wade was settled law in their confirmation hearings – hence they LIED!!

BUT ALL IS NOT LOST!!  There is already an initiative underway in Arizona to protect women’s reproductive rights through a constitutional amendment that would provide protection in spite of the Supreme Court ruling.  The group ARIZONANS FOR REPRODUCTIVE FREEDOM are trying to get this initiative on the November ballot.  They need 350,000 signatures by July 7, so they need your help!!  Go to their website for additional information.  We have petitions in our office. We’ll have them at the Supervisor forum on Thursday and the Ice Cream Social on the 4th of July. You may also stop by our office during regular office hours to sign.
